The grey body of the sky leaps slowly past my view
The endless summer went by sooner than we’d thought.
Our hearts still remember the thrill touch of the grass
On our skin after long baths in the lake.
I hate to say I miss the walks with you
To the other end of the pasture lands
Where we did share sunburns on our sandalled feet.
The glare of the sun dried all pain
For once no gash in my soul.
How we got into the car and drove off until morning
For once not driven by an insatiable need for more.
When the sun went up we sat on the front lid and watched
The golden glimmer on a field of corn.
Confide in me, I will sit and count every cloud
as their passage brings us back to that endless summer
